Meet the Cast in Highfield

Monday, January 18th, 2010

We love hearing about creative mission initiatives from our supporters, and sharing our best ideas. After last year’s Meet the Cast hunt around Mapperley, a church in Southampton read about it in Interact and was inspired to do something similar.

Nativity characters were hidden in shops around Highfield, and shoppers were invited to track them down. The first 50 participants to find them all received free coffee vouchers for a nearby coffee shop, where there was a short follow up time.

If you’ve tested some creative ideas this Christmas, let us know about them and we’ll share them here on the blog.

Prayer news for December – 4

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Christmas

  • Together let us celebrate the kindness of God come down; the Word made flesh and blood, dwelling among us.
  • For those who have yet to hear, or do not know … for those who hear the Christmas story for the first time this year, we ask that Christ be born in their hearts.
  • For us, as we wait, impatient for the fullness of your Kingdom, we pray: make us life words to those around us; words of love, of hope, of compassion; words of wisdom, of mercy, and of justice.

The bus stop nativity

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

This painting of the nativity will appear on 1,000 bus stops around the UK this Christmas. It is part of a campaign from the Churches Advertising Network, and is the latest in a series of eye-catching posters showing Christmas in a different light.

This year’s poster, which is also available to download, combines elements of Renaissance art with an contemporary urban scene by placing the nativity in a bus shelter.

The picture was painted by award winning artist Andrew Gadd, who explains the concept:

“At first I didn’t like the idea of painting a nativity scene in an urban setting. However, once it was explained that it was to be designed for bus stops, it gave me an idea… this idea. The bus stop when simplified is like a stable. It is after all a shelter; a place people go to but never want to be. So where better to stage a nativity? How unlikely! The image reflects the environment it will be shown in, and therefore includes the viewer. Which is what it is all about.”
